A companhia de aviação United Airlines baniu o transporte de macacos usados em testes de laboratório, segundo a política de transporte de animais publicada no site da empresa. A única condição em que a companhia considera aceitável é para levar ou trazer macacos de zoológicos ou santuários nos EUA e em Porto Rico. "Os animais devem ter um certificado de saúde válido, dentro do prazo de 10 dias da viagem", afirma o texto. A empresa define que primatas "destinados à indústria de animais de estimação" não serão aceitos em voos, assim como "macacos que servem como pets para pessoas". A PETA afirma ter obtido a mudança após uma "intensa campanha" de protestos no facebook e mais de 100 mil e-mails com pedidos para banir este tipo de transporte. O Peta diz ter iniciado sua campanha em 2011, após uma fusão entre a empresa e a Continental Airlines. Segundo a ONG, apenas outra companhia - a Air Canada - segue transportando primatas nos EUA e estaria implantando um banimento similar, o que significa que em breve nenhuma aérea dos EUA transportaria primatas usados em testes. A spokeswoman for United Airlines confirmed the news in an email to The Huffington Post, explaining that the airline does not "book, accept or transport non-human primates" to or from medical research facilities either in the U.S. or the rest of the world. PETA began a campaign to persuade United Airlines to forbid the shipping of primates in 2011 when the airline merged with Continental and adopted Continental's shipping policies, which allowed primates to be carried as cargo, according to PETA's press release. PETA's campaign was conducted on social media as well as in public protests. The animal rights group even bought stock in United Airlines in order to propose a shareholder resolution to stop the practice, according to the statement. There are at least four international airlines left in the world that still ship primates for laboratory testing: China Eastern Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Philippine Airlines and Air France, PETA's director of Laboratory Investigations, Justin Goodman, told HuffPost in an email. "PETA and its international affiliates will now escalate efforts to show Air France and the other three airlines still shipping thousands of primates to pain and misery in laboratories that people around the world are disgusted by this practice and will choose other airlines until the companies stop facilitating this cruelty," Goodman said.
